Hell, I couldn\u2019t even name a\n70\u2019s rock band. Like I feel like I could say <em>Led Zeppelin <\/em>(?????) and not be completely wrong (???) but it\u2019s\nliterally a stab in the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Daisy-Jones-and-the-six-picture.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-268\" width=\"530\" height=\"707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Daisy-Jones-and-the-six-picture.jpg 384w, https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Daisy-Jones-and-the-six-picture-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, Taylor Jenkins Reid\u2019s 6<sup>th<\/sup> novel isn\u2019t\nonly for hardcore rock fans. Admittedly, I\u2019d been put off when I first heard\nthe premise. A rock band from the 70\u2019s isn\u2019t my jam, I thought. I um\u2019d and ah\u2019d\nfor a while until I physically couldn\u2019t get away from the fact that everybody\nwas talking about it. So I gave in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m glad that I gave in. Not blown away, as I\u2019d imagined I\nmight be, but glad. It\u2019s a great book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We meet Daisy Jones at the end of the 60\u2019s. At 14 years old\nshe\u2019s wandering the Sunset Strip, tired of her emotionally absent parents and\nlooking for someone, anyone, to connect with. Her cobalt blue eyes and copper\nhair demand attention, and almost immediately she\u2019s flung herself head long\ninto the spiral of drugs, booze and meaningless sex with strangers. This is\nbefore she\u2019s even become a rock star. Her voice though, that\u2019s where the magic\nreally happens. Daisy\u2019s never taken a singing lesson in her life, but her voice\nsounds like it\u2019s been plucked from gravelly heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> \u201cI had absolutely no interest in being somebody else&#8217;s muse.<br>I am not a muse.<br>I am the somebody.<br>End of fucking story.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p><cite>Taylor Jenkins Reid, <em>Daisy Jones &amp; The Six<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Pretty soon, we are introduced to Billy Dunne, our other\nmain talent and star of the show. He\u2019s arrogant, charming and wears head-to-toe\ndenim. A real heart throb type. Together with his brother and their band,\nthey\u2019re playing gigs for a few bucks a night. All you really need to know to\nget into the tale is that they\u2019re spotted, they add a few members to their band\nand become The Six. That\u2019s when the magic begins to happen for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daisy Jones and The Six are brought together one night by a\nstroke of genius. One half has the song, the other, the voice, and the two\nmerge like a sticky, sumptuous goo. As in it\u2019s fucking divine, but actually a\nright mess when you try to clean it up. What follows is a tangled tale of\naddiction, a lot of hate and a delicate love, that really, everyone is\nexpecting, but no one really knows how to address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This novel is told as an oral history, which I found to be\nalmost off putting when I first heard about it. I quickly changed my mind as I\nbegan to read, though. Once you get over the fact that there are no traditional\nchapters, and just snippets from each character stitched together, it reads\nfantastically and really ramps up the emotion behind the story in a way a\ntraditional novel couldn\u2019t have done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fictional author of the book has spent 8 years rounding\nup evidence in the form of interviews from each of the band members and the\npeople closest to them (friends, partners, managers, producers), and concocted\na labyrinth of a story, leaving us to ultimately decide what and who we believe.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The novel plays heavily with our trust and the idea of\nmemories: how do we know who\u2019s telling the truth and who\u2019s twisting it into\ntheir own truth? How do we know certain characters simply don\u2019t remember\ncorrectly because they were so high or drunk at the time the action happened? A\nlot of the band members\u2019 stories don\u2019t quite match up with others, leaving the\ntale occasionally ambiguous. At the same time though, TJR\u2019s complications leave\nus rooting for these people, (who always seem completely real, by the way)\nhoping and willing that they are going to change their actions for the better. As\nwith any well written novel, our hopes aren\u2019t always satiated. We don\u2019t always\nget the peachy ending we want so badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> \u201cYou have these lines you won\u2019t cross. But then you cross them. And suddenly you possess the very dangerous information that you can break the rule and the world won\u2019t instantly come to an end. You\u2019ve taken a big, black, bold line and you\u2019ve made it a little bit gray. And now every time you cross it again, it just gets grayer and grayer until one day you look around and you think, There was a line here once, I think.\u201d <\/p><cite>Taylor Jenkins Reid, <em>Daisy Jones &amp; The Six<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Addiction is one of the most tangible themes running through\nthis book, whether that\u2019s addiction to drugs, alcohol or even love. Many of the\ncharacters struggle with some sort of addiction or other, unsurprising really,\ngiven that that\u2019s probably one of the first things that spring to mind when you\nthink about rock stars, no matter the decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the addiction that really gives the novel its pain and\ngrit, and where the reader, feels most hopeless. It\u2019s impossible to tell which\ndirection the ending is going to take, and naturally, there is a twist towards\nthe concluding time frame (which I will not be spoiling, don\u2019t panic!). Whether\nit\u2019s the build-up of Daisy\u2019s pill and booze habit, or Billy trying to stay on\nthe straight and narrow after a stint in rehab, or even the feelings they have\nabout one another, the descriptions from the interviews are at times jarring to\nread. It\u2019s easy to imagine the toll on all of the characters whilst they all attempted\nto keep the band from going under, stop fights from erupting, or even keep\nmembers sane and away from the precipice of certain doom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> \u201cIt scared me that the only thing between this moment of calm and the biggest tragedy of my life was me choosing not to do it.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p><cite>Taylor Jenkins Reid, <em>Daisy Jones &amp; The Six<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst I didn\u2019t next level <em>adore <\/em>this book, I did love it. It\u2019s a solid four stars from me. I\nread it in three sittings, and although it\u2019s not the lengthiest of novels, it\ncertainly took up plenty of my day whilst I lay there consumed by the rampant\nlives of these rock stars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Definitely add <em>Daisy\nJones &amp; The Six <\/em>to your reading list.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m somewhat of an embarrassment: I\u2019m not really into music as one expects one to be reading a fictional biopic of a 70\u2019s rock band.
