You\u2019re\nliterally going to one of the most vibrant, intense and incredibly modern\ncountries in the world. Grab yourself a JR Pass<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re intending to work your way around the country a\nlittle bit, perhaps visit a few different cities, or simply ride that subway like\nit\u2019s going out of fashion, I\u2019d definitely recommend a JR Pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan Rail Passes don\u2019t come cheap at just under \u20ac400, but they do take the hassle out of travel, and could end up saving you quite a bit of money, which is important in a country as expensive as Japan. You can use them on any JR line in any of the cities you visit, as well as the main Shinkansen (bullet train) routes, so they\u2019re incredibly handy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/JR-pass.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/JR-pass.jpg 384w, https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/JR-pass-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><figcaption>Grab yourself a JR Pass before you leave<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You <em>must <\/em>order\nyour JR Pass before you leave for Japan, and you can do this by applying online\nhere, where you can also read up on everything you need to know about using\nyour pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve ordered your JR Pass, you\u2019ll receive some\ndocuments in the post which you then need to take with you to Japan to swap for\nthe real deal. It looks a little something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using your JR pass in the stations couldn\u2019t be easier\neither. All you need to do is show your pass to a guard at the ticket gate and\nyou\u2019ll be allowed right through, which certainly saves on time usually spent\nqueuing up for a ticket too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should know that the Japanese are super strict on all their rules, and the JR Pass isn\u2019t an exception. If you lose your JR Pass, you\u2019ll be expected to buy another one, so keep it safe!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Buy_a_Japanese_SIM_card_for_your_phone\"><\/span>2. Buy a Japanese SIM card for your phone<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Roaming charges can be brutal on your bank balance,\nespecially if you\u2019re planning on traveling for longer than a few days. This is\nwhere buying a Japanese SIM card for your phone could really help you out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After doing our research, we decided to go with the Japan experience\nSIM cards, which are provided by Japan Rail and can last either 7, 16, or 31\ndays from your first date of use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We went for the 31-day bundle, as our trip was 18 days,\nwhich meant that for just \u20ac35,\nwe were given unlimited data on our phones. That\u2019s WhatsApp and the rest of the\ninternet free to use as much as they\u2019re needed, so you can get in touch with\neverybody and stay in the loop. That\u2019s great news for all us Instagram junkies,\nright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everywhere we stayed also had fantastic, quick Wi-Fi, so if you\ndon\u2019t end up getting an unlimited SIM card, you don\u2019t have to worry too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"During_your_adventure\"><\/span><strong>During your adventur<\/strong>e<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Keep_to_the_left\"><\/span>3. Keep to the left!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like us Brits, the Japanese drive on the left hand side\nof the road. They keep things orderly by also keeping to the left whilst they\nwalk, including up staircases and escalators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find yourself in a sea of people, check your\nbearings! Are you on the correct side? Unlike the British, the Japanese won\u2019t\nscold you for being on the wrong side \u2013 even on the escalators\u2026 they\u2019ll usually\njust wait patiently until they can pass!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TOP TIP: If you visit Osaka, forget most of what I just said: Osakans walk on the right hand side (they still drive on the left though, of course!). Why? Because way back when, Osaka was a city of merchants who held their bags in their right hands apparently and didn\u2019t want to disturb anyone. While I\u2019m not too sure whether the origins of that story are completely true, you definitely do need to walk on the right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Be_wary_of_public_bathrooms\"><\/span>4. Be wary of public bathrooms<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst Japan is seen as having quite Western values and\ntechniques in their day-to-day lives, sometimes the public toilets can be a\nlittle troublesome for those of us who aren\u2019t used to squatting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I came across a few public toilets that included the old\nhole in the ground situation, and some of them didn\u2019t include toilet paper. Not\nhelpful when you\u2019re dying for the toilet. However, luckily, these same toilets\nactually had one or two (literally) regular seated toilet in the same building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help beat this sometimes sticky situation, ensure that\nyou take your own tissues with you, and ensure that you head to the loo in any restaurant\nbefore you leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TOP TIP: 7\/11, Japan\u2019s most popular convenience store, almost always have a public toilet hidden in the back for customers. They\u2019re free too, just make sure you leave with a coffee or something to remain polite!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Use_public_transport\"><\/span>5. Use public transport<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re heading to Tokyo, you should know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/simoncrerar\/tokyo-is-a-mega-city\">just how big it is<\/a>. It dwarfs cities like Amsterdam and London that to be quite frank, are massive themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re going to want to use public transport to get around, that\u2019s all I\u2019m saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/shinkansen.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"463\" class=\"wp-image-463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/shinkansen.jpg 384w, https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/shinkansen-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/JR.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"464\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/JR.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/?attachment_id=464\" class=\"wp-image-464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/JR.jpg 384w, https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/JR-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-caption\">Taking the Shinkansen and Metro trains can be easy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re in luck if you\u2019ve bought a JR pass already, because\nyou can use any of the JR trains that pass through any of the cities, and most\nof these JR trains have a loop track that gets you to all the main areas\nwithout any fuss whatsoever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For other journeys, you can simply buy a ticket from any of\nthe <em>numerous<\/em> subway or train station\nyou arrive at (honestly, you can find train and subway stations almost\neverywhere). They\u2019re relatively cheap, and you could get a one-way ticket for\nas little as 100 Yen, which is the equivalent to about 80 cents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TOP TIP: Don\u2019t be afraid of using Japanese trains or\nsubways. We didn\u2019t find one station that only had Japanese. Luckily, everywhere\nthat was signposted was also written in English, so you won\u2019t get too lost!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TOP TIP 2: You\u2019ll be asked to pop your phone onto silent mode whilst you\u2019re in any sort of train in Japan. It\u2019s actually a pretty strict rule, so do be sure to take note, and also, don\u2019t take any phone calls whilst in the train either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"384\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/metro1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/metro1.jpg 384w, https:\/\/nether-netherland.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/metro1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><figcaption>Remember to turn your phone onto silent in the train<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Be_wary_of_cover_charges\"><\/span>6. Be wary of cover charges<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing we found in some cities, or some areas of cities\nto be exact, was that a cover charge per person came into play when we went\ninto an Izakaya (a Japanese version of a bar).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that you are charged simply to enter the\nbuilding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ok, well not quite. Usually you\u2019ll pay your cover charge\nwhich turns into a small snack per person per table. But still, even if you\u2019ve\njust eaten a 3 course dinner and just fancy a drink, you still have to pay the\ncover charge and receive the snack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting that in some places, you\u2019ll be charged extra for not being Japanese. That\u2019s right, the cover charge might have been hoiked up higher than it would be if you were a local. It\u2019s in these kinds of situations where you have to pick your battles. Do you want to pay extra, when the prices of the drinks are already quite high? Are you happy to be paying more than a local has to? Some people won\u2019t care, but for others, you might want to head to another Izakaya where they don\u2019t ask for as much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Keep_hold_of_your_litter\"><\/span>7. Keep hold of your litter<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing that I couldn\u2019t get my head around in Japan was\njust how clean the streets were. I\u2019m not exaggerating, we saw hardly any\nlitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another thing you won\u2019t see much of, are bins for your\nlitter, which got me to thinking: where is all the litter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Japanese are well versed in taking their litter home\nwith them. It\u2019s seen as rude and impolite to eat and drink whilst on the move\nanyway, so this isn\u2019t too much of a problem for them. For this reason, they don\u2019t\nreally have any rubbish on them while they\u2019re out on the streets, so it actually\nkind of makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do have some litter that needs disposing of, pop it into your bag if possible, and hold on to it until you reach your hotel or B\u2019n\u2019B. Or, if you\u2019re really lucky and eagle eyed, you may spot a few bins by the vending machines that line the streets. You don\u2019t need to tip<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This might be a weird one, depending on where you\u2019re from, but you don\u2019t need to tip in restaurants. Cash is King<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You should be willing to pay with cash for almost anything.\nIn some places, cards aren\u2019t even accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, you can find cash machines all over the city, the best ones being in the 7-eleven stores, which allow you to take a minimum of 100 Yen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So guys, they\u2019re my top 9 tips for traveling through Japan!
